Compact digital, compact underwater cameras aren't big and bulky anymore, nor will they require a waterproof housing to become at home in the water. For me personally, it is important that a camera have the ability to stand on its own in order that I can take timed shots where I will sit it on the rock or other structure in order that I can be in the photo as well. For fisherman, an underwater camera must be able to sit on top of uneven rocks. Not everybody carries or has time and energy to set up a tripod, so you've to use what you have around at the time.
Adventure Rated
If you're at all interested in buying an underwater camera, you are most likely the adventurous type. If that is the case then you will want to make sure you purchase a camera that may handle whatever you will throw advertising online. You will want to make sure you buy can take a few bumps and bruises. Make sure it is rated to take falls and definately will stand up under pressure. There aren't many models out there now that are made to be abused.
Price
The matter of price is less realistic these days as it once was with the difference between underwater and hydrophobic (regular) cameras. Actually, they cost about the same are available in different price ranges. Compact digital underwater cameras vary from under $200 to over $400, just like standard digital cameras, making price not just a factor when choosing between one or other. It is an important factor though when selecting which underwater camera, as price can fluctuate a lot.
